Biography

Vintage Astronaut is a NC based progressive jazz trio pioneering the use of computers and analog synthesizers in improv-based music. The band coalesced from a weekly jam session at a small bar in Winston-Salem where the local heavyweight jazz and session players got together, and became an experiment in musical improvisation with an array of vintage and modern electronic instruments. This idea has condensed and evolved and become a tight trio who are pushing boundaries both with music and the capabilities of computer instruments. They play progressive jazz that incorporates deft musicality with modern electronics and fusion chops, providing a high-energy, jaw dropping concert.

  • Captain

Vintage Astronaut is the brainchild and soul-project of John Ray. John is a passionate improviser, and dreamed of a trio with these capabilities while he was touring with early 2000’s live hip-hop pioneers the Solos Unit. It took 15 years and several attempts to find the right players to bring his vision to reality.

John has toured and performed professionally all over the United States for 22 years, with acts as diverse as the Allman Brothers and the Roots. He runs a production company called Mr. Haircut that has released over 30 albums, and a podcast, also called Mr. Haircut, co-hosted by drummer Jonathan Greene where they discuss all things improv and jam with some of the areas top session players.

  • Navigator

Michael is a harmonic wizard; a master painter of sound. Vintage Astronaut starts their sets with a blank canvas, and Michael carefully blends color to make the band resonate in new, exciting and adventurous ways. He is an improviser extraordinaire, and one of the finest musicians of our generation. He is an accomplished saxophonist, bassist, drummer, and pianist, and speaks and breathes music in ways most people can’t dream of.

  • Engine Room

Jonathan Greene is world-famous among drummers. In just a few short years he has amassed a massive following of drummers on social media because he is a brilliant teacher capable of enlightening the most talented drummers in the world, which he is firmly among. He is a rhythmic explorer, and his ideas are changing the way drummers of our generation are approaching the instrument. Jonathan is truly a legend in the making. Jonathan co-hosts the podcast Mr. Haircut, and has his own youtube channel called Drumosophy where he explores his rhythmic ideas with his characteristic wry wit.
